With the onset of looming winter, those in the bunker made sure that they had everything in hand. They had to worry about their foodstocks and making sure that they had enough to eat. In that, just having the garden, became a godsend.
The devastation up above was hard to even fathom after seeing the feeds that the plumbots who went on bi-weekly forays topside. In that regards, they were very lucky to have plumbots be a part of their family, since they would do everything that the humans couldn't do. Plumbots could do those forays into the radiation without the risk to their life that the humans would always have to consider in the back of their mind.
Haruo did feel bad sending them up; because circuits and hydraulic fluid though they may be, Horace and Hildegard were beneficial members of the family and they had grown on the rest of the family too.
It was a major dilemma; stay in the bunker and run the risk of going crazy, or go topside and get irradiated. Needless to say, neither were the best possible choices but after a nuclear conflict, what choices did you have. Considering the slow poisoning and nausea as well as bleeding from every possible orifice; the latter choice was out of the question for everyone in the bunker. No, they were staying in the bunker and waiting until the atmosphere cleared off enough radiation to allow most to go topside. Scientists had predicted the stripping of the ozone layer completely which would end up bringing so much UV radiation onto the planet's surface that people could sunburn very easily if they were exposed. So life on the surface at any rate without the protection of bunkers would not be possible for quite some time, possibly even generations until the atmosphere healed itself and who knew how long that would take.
In the meantime River and Haruo...and the rest had things they could do
...like perhaps repopulating the planet?
like making sure that their alchemy and science skills were brought up to maximum because they would need every advantage that they possibly could muster to survive the new harsh climate of the planet they grew up on. Humans had done this to themselves but those who suffered were the youngest. Humans could make every excuse on the books to justify their decisions, but in the end it came down to two sides making a pact to nuke themselves off the face of the earth. And now the Eight had to deal with the ramifications; and live through the results of those older than them who had made those decisions.
...and the heavens opened up and the skies poured a freezing, radioactive rain as the temperatures plummeted.
When the humans were asleep, the plumbots turned around and made nanites which they passed off to the humans to reverse engineer to get circuit boards and Hildegard always made sure that the fridge was stocked up for her humans.
Phil, of course, being unstable, had a bit of a panic attack. Luckily he didn't try to go open the blast door, but tried to calm himself by hyperventilating into a paper bag. It seemed to work because he settled down and started talking to himself.
Evidently so much woohoo had ended up with a result that poor Autumn wasn't expecting...so soon. When she did tell Mickey, Mickey was ecstatic. It seemed as though he was quite willing to help take care of the little one when it showed up. After all, he caused it.
Noel took a gemstone sample of a moonstone that he had in his inventory. Luckily Hildegard, the last time that she'd conjured, had managed to conjure up a moonstone and she gave it to Noel so that he could clone the gemstone. This was a key ingredient in the Bottled Curse of the Lycan elixir. This would extend their lifespan immensely, but it would turn them into feral beasts every full moon.
...but it was a risk that they were all willing to take in exchange for being able to live longer and bring the earth back to life.
